EUROPEAN CREDIT TRANSFER SYSTEM (ECTS)

ECTS is a system of academic credit allocation and transfer which has been developed experimentally by 145 universities in EU Member States and EFTA countries and is now being implemented by more than 1.000 institutions.

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is intended to promote co-operation between European Higher Education Institutions and to enhance opportunities for students to study abroad which is an important element in academic and professional career development. To facilitate academic recognition, the majority of European universities have adopted the ECTS.

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a programme, objectives preferably specified in terms of learning outcomes and competences to be acquired. ECTS facilitates the recognition of periods of study abroad (but not of the final degrees) for ERASMUS students.

ECTS provides a common scale for measuring in credits the student workload required to complete course units. Each course module has a number of ECTS credits allocated to it.

ECTS provides an instrument to create transparency, to build bridges between institutions and to widen the choices available to students. The system makes it easier for institutions to recognize the learning achievements of students through the use of common measurements. ECTS has its own credit and grading system and provides a means to interpret the various national systems of higher education in member states. The ECTS system is essentially based on three core elements:

• information on study programs and student achievement
• mutual agreement between the partner institutions and the student
• a common credit framework to indicate student workload

Main Features

The three core elements of ECTS are made operational through the use of three key documents: the “information package”, “the application form or learning agreement” and the “transcript of records”. ECTS is not intended to restrict students, teachers or institutions and in no way regulates the content, structure or equivalence of study programs.

These are issues of quality which have to be determined by the Higher Education institutions themselves. There is, however, a code of good practice which provides a framework within which institutions can work towards their mutual objectives. Because ECTS depends on trust and confidence, participating institutions select their own partners. Active partnership between institutions and their academic staff is vital because the study period undertaken abroad will replace a comparable period of study at the home university (including examinations or other forms of assessment). The content of the agreed study program may differ and this is valuable and important in terms of diversity in the learning experience. Partners must, however, keep track of what students are doing, and transparency is therefore a vital characteristic of the system.
